Dog Enrichment Guide

What is enrichment?

Enrichment gives your dog a way to use their nose, mouth and brain. Sniffing and licking are natural dog behaviors, and simple toys can turn mealtime or quiet time into something to do.

Snuffle mats

  • Scatter a portion of your dog's kibble or a few small treats into the folds.
  • Start with an easy scatter, and make it harder as your dog learns the game.
  • Lay the mat on a flat floor and stay nearby while your dog sniffs.

Lick mats

  • Spread a thin layer of a dog-safe topping across the mat.
  • Press it onto a smooth, flat surface such as glass, a shower wall or a countertop.
  • Clean it after each use.

Keep it safe

  • Always supervise. These are enrichment toys, not chew toys.
  • Take a toy away if your dog starts chewing it or swallowing pieces.
  • Check topping labels. Many sugar-free peanut butters contain xylitol, which is toxic to dogs.
  • If you have questions about your dog's diet or behavior, ask your vet.
